Welcome to Professor Prifti's Home Page
Erida Prifti graduated in 2000 from University of Vlora with a four-year integrated diploma (MSc) and a summa cum laude thesis in Translation and Teaching of English as a Foreign Language on Stress Shift in English Grammatical Categories. Immediately upon graduation she was hired at the University of Vlora's Languages Department as an adjunct professor and started teaching Translation Theory and Techniques, and Comparative Translation.
In 2001, she became a full-time lecturer at the same department. This was a year in which higher education institutions in Albania started offering for the first time two new year-long courses: Simultaneous Interpretation and Consecutive Interpretation.
In 2004-2005, Erida Prifti conducted research and held the position of Visiting Professor in Action Research in Interpretation Studies, and Italian Language and Grammar at the Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation, and the Graduate School of Languages and Educational Linguistics, Monterey Institute of International Studies, California, United States, on a JFDP scholarship.
The results of her research at the Monterey Institute of International Studies were reflected in her book Bazat e Interpretimit (Introduction to Interpretation, 2005). This was the first piece of literature published in the Albanian language on Interpretation Studies, which was followed by three other books, namely Praktikë Interpretimi në Konsekutiv (Practice in Consecutive Interpretation, 2006), Interpretimi Simultan (Simultaneous Interpretation, 2007) and Praktikum në Interpretim Simultan (Practicum in Simultaneous Interpretation, 2008).
Professor Prifti's schedule is busy with speaking engagements. She was invited to present papers at conferences and symposia on Translation and Interpretation Studies held at University of Cambridge, University of London, Università degli Studi G. Marconi, Hacettepe University, etc.
Erida Prifti is the first Albanian scholar with published research in the field of Interpretation Studies. Professor Prifti developed both the Simultaneous and the Consecutive Interpretation courses at a time in which resources were scarce or non-existent in the country.
There were no interpretation booths at the University of Vlora, nor equipment to practice simultaneous interpreting, so she had to improvise a portable simultaneous interpretation system by connecting, using adapters, two pairs of headphones (for two students at a time to take turns in interpreting from the audio source) and a speakers' set to a portable audio device (for the class to follow the interpreting process), which, of course, was later replaced with more advanced multimedia devices. Speeches were recorded from radio and television programs to use as practice material and instances of interpreters at work were brought to class in order to illustrate the lectures.
Professor Prifti would always strive to prove to her students that interpreting was, first, a solid profession (although they had to imagine it for the time being); second, that interpreting was a profession that is much in demand in the world; third, that very soon there would be a market for professional interpreters even in Albania.
During those years, Profesor Prifti has been witnessing the knowledge of Interpreting Studies expand among entire generations of graduates, and this fact alone suffices to justify her love and passion for the subject.
In January 2010, the University of Vlora President acknowledged her with a 'Best Academician Award'.
Erida Prifti still teaches Translation and Interpretation courses at the University of Vlora, holding the position of tenured lecturer.
